Who ran it
Joaquín and Rosario planted the first almond trees at Els Tossals in 1984, on the terraces his father had built. Rosario died in 2021 and Joaquín could no longer cope with the March frosts or the harvest. Their daughter is a nurse in Barcelona. The farm was up for sale for two years and nobody called.
What we have changed
We bought the 31 hectares in 2025. We have put drip irrigation on the lower terraces, which is where the soil holds water. There are also temperature sensors that switch on the frost defence in time. Where trees had died we replanted guara, which flowers later and dodges almost every frost.
What it gives now
The last harvest gave 41,200 kilos of shelled almonds. We crack them in Alcañiz and they reach the shop roasted or in their shell. Joaquín comes up every year to see the blossom.
