Mas de la Vall
Cretas, Matarranya
Cesáreo and Amparo bought Mas de la Vall in 1971, the year they married. They irrigated by gravity with water from the Matarranya and took the olives to the village co-op. Their children, Nuria and Joaquín, live in Zaragoza and neither was going to take on the farm. In the last four seasons the upper plots went unpicked because they could find nobody to climb up and beat the branches.
We bought the 26 hectares in 2024 and Cesáreo stayed on with us. He comes up most days and tells us where the frost lands first and where the ground dries out soonest. We have put in drip irrigation with moisture probes in every sector, cleared the trunks of all 5,980 trees so the shaker and umbrella can get in and set up a weather station on the high ground.
Last season brought in 149,400 kilos of olives. A third more than the last crop Cesáreo picked on his own. We take it to the mill in Calaceite the same day and that is where the bottles with the farm name come from.
