Najerilla Valley Vineyard
Najera, La Rioja
About this farm
An 18-hectare vineyard on the slopes of Najera, planted with tempranillo and garnacha vines aged between 20 and 60 years. The fruit is made into wine at the estate winery under the Rioja qualified designation of origin, with oak-barrel ageing. Bush and trellis vines grow on the clay-limestone soils of the Najerilla river valley.
Story
The Saenz de Tejada family began farming these plots in 1962, selling their grapes to local cooperatives. In 1998 the second generation built the winery and started bottling its own wine. Since 2015 the vineyard has been run alongside six other families in the area, sharing the press and ageing cellar. Today it combines old bush-trained garnacha with newer trellised tempranillo plantings.
Farming practices
Sustainable growing with cover crops between rows and green pruning to control yields. Reduced spraying and a hand harvest into crates.
