About this farm
An organic urban garden spread across three rooftops in the Lavapiés neighborhood of central Madrid. Crops grow in raised beds and planters with lightweight substrate, supplying local residents and nearby small shops. Production is seasonal and delivered in boxes of fresh vegetables.
Story
The project began in 2017 when a residents' association lent the rooftop of its building for a shared garden. Two more rooftops joined in 2019 and the group formed a worker cooperative. It has since grown from a handful of raised beds to a drip irrigation system fed by a rainwater tank. Five members now run it with help from neighborhood volunteers.
Farming practices
Certified organic growing with drip irrigation fed by rainwater, composting of local organic waste, and integrated pest management without synthetic pesticides.
