About the farm

Traditional irrigated market garden in the Ribera Navarra: artichoke, Piquillo pepper, asparagus and tomato, sold to a cannery and at the local market.
It covers 26 hectares of fertile floodplain, highly productive and labour-intensive.
History

The Ebro floodplain has always been market-garden country. The family works the same plots as their grandparents, with the artichoke and the Piquillo pepper as emblems that go straight to the local cannery.
Each plot has its own rotation: what is pepper one year is artichoke or tomato the next, to avoid tiring the soil and to break pest cycles.
Part of the produce is paid in cash and part in canned goods from the same season, a long-standing deal with the village factory.
How we run the farm

Furrow and drip irrigation depending on the crop, with vegetable rotation and local manure to keep the floodplain fertile.
Much of the work is manual: planting, weeding and harvesting are done by hand, hence the heavy need for labour in season.
