About the farm

Highland Almond Grove

Almendros del Altiplano is a fully organic almond estate covering 40 hectares on the high plateau of Murcia, planted entirely with two almond varieties: the prized marcona and the traditional comuna. We are now in our eleventh season, and the farm is running at full productive capacity. Every technology layer we have built over the years is active: certified organic management, IoT field sensors, drone application, harvest robotics, support greenhouses, vertical farming for auxiliary production, on-site composting and predictive yield modelling. There is no remaining technology upgrade to switch on, which is genuinely good news because it means every euro we deploy now goes straight into amplifying what already works.

Alongside the core crop, six complementary revenue activities are running or in their consolidation phase, including agritourism, direct sales and product transformation. These are not experiments or side projects. They generate a solid income floor that reduces dependence on a single harvest and gives the whole operation greater stability across seasons. We also maintain full crop insurance on the almond plots. An almond tree is a long-lived productive asset, and years of careful work deserve protection against climate events that no amount of technology can fully prevent.

History

History

Eleven seasons in almonds means eleven full cycles of blossom, fruit set, ripening and harvest. The Murciano high plateau is a demanding environment: dry summers, late spring frosts that can knock out the flower, and real water competition in dry years. That is precisely why we committed to organic production from the start. It was not a marketing choice. It was an agronomic one. Living soils build resilience against stress, and the price premium that certified organic almonds command in quality channels justifies the higher cost of production over the long run.

Over the years we have added technology steadily and deliberately. Every tool currently operating on this farm has been here long enough for us to understand its real behaviour in our specific conditions, not just the performance figures from a brochure. The sensors tell us when the soil needs water before the tree shows any visible stress. The drones cut treatment time and improve coverage across the whole estate. The harvest robotics give us consistency at the most critical moment of the year. All of that, built on a certified organic foundation, is what gives Almendros del Altiplano its character and its competitive position.

Future plans

Future plans

The clear priority for this season and the next is raising all sixteen almond plots to maximum investment level. The full technology stack is already installed and every yield multiplier is active, but the investment level of each plot determines how intensively that stack is actually leveraged. Bringing all sixteen plots to level three has a known additional cost that our current cash position covers comfortably, and the return comes from every multiplier operating at full power on a production base that is already mature and well established. It is the highest-return move available to us right now, and it is where our capital is going.

In parallel, we are maintaining our brand channel and a sustained marketing budget to keep brand strength at its ceiling. The price premium that quality organic almonds earn in the market only holds if buyers see consistency and presence year after year. It is not something you can ease off for a season and recover at will. The complementary activities will continue to consolidate. The goal is for agritourism, direct sales and transformation together to represent a genuinely meaningful share of total profit, not a marginal addition to the bottom line.

The one remaining upgrade on the table is desalination, and its prerequisite is already met. We have not activated it because water is not currently a binding constraint on this farm. But the decision is analysed, the cost is known, and if water stress ever emerges as a real limiting factor, we can move without delay. That is how we run this operation: no unnecessary urgency, but no surprises either, because the options are always thought through before they become critical.
